In the novel Sula, Toni Morrison creates a black community called "the Bottom" under the domination of mainstream society. She depicts the struggles of black warriors in "the Bottom", such as Sula, Eva, and Shadrack, as they strive to break free from white oppression and construct their own identities. From the perspective of Bakhtin’s theory of carnivalesque, this novel exhibits three characteristics of carnivalesque writing: the carnivalesque "marginal" spatiotemporal dimension, the carnivalesque grotesque body, and the carnivalesque death imagery. These characteristics deepen the critical themes of the work and reveal the author’s creative intentions. |
