| Notes about Yuewei Caotang is a collection of fantastic tales encompassing the characteristics of ghosts and monsters, historical records studies, and historical documents, which embodies Ji Yun's academic research achievements and expression of his emotion and opinions. It is a novel with distinctly scholarly quality written with academic mind, which is embodied in writing novels with examining facts, interpreting academic knowledge with ghosts and monsters, expressing emotions and ideas with book style. It typically reflects scholar's approach to fiction writing and the literary ideal of "carrying the knowledge" through fiction. The complex textual form is closely related to the academic and political environment of that time and to Ji Yun's identity as a scholar. |
