In Hesse's novels, the images of the mother represent sensibility, emotion and love on the one hand, and nature, primitive impulse and vitality (embodied as "dark world" in the novels) on the other hand, which are the sources of power for adolescents to resist and rebel against the destruction of rationality in the patriarchal world. In Hesse's early novel Under the Wheel, with the mother being absent, the strong discipline of modern instrumental rationality and patriarchy made the protagonist fail to gain the strength to overcome the identity crisis and eventually went to extinction. In the later works, the protagonists seeked the mother, acknowledged and accepted their own natural characters, challenged and rebelled the paternal authority by identifying and participating in the dark world, established independent self-consciousness and finally achieved the individual maturity. |
