| The analysis of the characters, the sights of the underworld, the means of entry into the underworld, and the themes of travel stories in Japanese Ryouiki shows the people's perception of the underworld and attitude to life and death, the spread and influence of Buddhism in the periods of Nara and Heian, Japan's attitude towards absorbing foreign culture and ways of doing so. |
