| In Disgrace, Coetzee shows his concern about the post-apartheid South Africa. At first, Lurie endows the "gaze" with a sense of shame when gazing at the animals. However, this gaze also helps Lurie to notice the common shame between human beings and animals brought by ageing and death,consequently promoting the empathy between two of them. Then,the gaze of male subjects at female objects is subverted by the shame of ageing. Therefore,the young females represented by Lucy refuse the traditional power relationship between men and women,casting oppressing gaze at males.At last,the gaze of black people destroys the self of the white and the shame from the other’s gaze leads to the disorder of self-behavior. |
