Emile Durkheim's sociology of religion reflects the theory of social realism. He argued that religion was social reality, and that its essence lay in the binary opposition between the holy and the profane. In the meantime,he went beyond the dispute between animism and naturism and contended that tokenism was the origin of religion. The totem is a symbol and a religion about anonymous impersonal forces. Totem is both collective and individual. Collective exult, as the core of tokenism, connects individuals and society, and is capable of achieving the benign operation of the social order. |
